10 Things You Should Know About Selling

Almost every position in a company or organization requires some kind of selling. If you are not selling to external customers then you may be selling to internal customers. There are numerous books, articles, courses, podcasts, and videos available on the internet on how to sell. But there are simple rules you need to adhere to to be a successful salesperson.

Let’s look at 10 of them:

Specialize in selling one thing.

The saying that a great salesperson can sell anything to anybody is not entirely true. The more you specialize in terms of product, service, and industry, the more likely you are to thrive and sell successfully.

Winnow down your sales leads

Spend time to sieve out from the list of leads you have to identify prospects who will probably buy. When your target list is tighter, you are more likely to find someone who is interested.

Carry out your research first

Do not contact a prospect before you’ve checked out the person’s LinkedIn profile, researched his or her company and industry. Try to find at least one good reason why the prospect should have a discussion with you.

Get into a conversation

We understand that you want to sell, which isn’t bad but you need to engage the prospect in a conversation to ascertain if the prospect is a potential customer. A sales pitch at the initial stage is just a waste of time.

Be a person, not a salesperson

Many people dislike when you sell to them. Selling as a profession isn’t bad but try to be human and yourself. Show people you genuinely care about them.

Qualify the prospect quickly

During the conversation, you have to find out whether the prospect has a need for what you are offering and the money to buy it. If not, then you have to eliminate the prospect from your list.

Focus on the customer’s customer

As a salesperson, when you are assessing needs, you should have at the back of your mind that your job is to help the prospect meet his or her needs. Your needs are not important, focus on the prospects’ needs.

Adapt the buying process

Every customer is unique and as such all of them cannot follow the same sales process. You need to be able to understand how the customer buys the sort of things you’re selling and providing the needed assistance would make the purchase happen. Adapt the buying process to suit each prospect.

To sell, you must close

Getting a No from prospects is usually dreaded by salespeople. Nevertheless, if you don’t ask for the business, or wait too long to ask for it, you are going to lose the sale. Don’t spend too much time selling, when you see any slight opportunity, close the deal.

Build long term relationships

Building relationships is crucial in sales. It makes it much easier for the purchase to happen. When you build good long-term relationships, you won’t need to sell any longer because your friends will do your selling for you.
