The Importance of Social Media to Jobseekers

I remember some months back when I was unemployed. I had just completed my youth service and wanted to further my study while working as a content writer. I launched myself on social media platforms as a content writer but no one seems to be interested in my service. During this period, I visited my uncle and he volunteered to help me find a job as a teacher in one of the secondary schools around. At the moment, I wasn’t interested in teaching and so I declined but when the news got to my parents, it was a tussle. I could feel their frustration of having to attend to my needs when it should have been the other way round. The silent battle increased when I got a client and could not deliver. I was like a joker.

Truth be told, there is nothing as frustrating as being an adult and not having a means of livelihood. There is nothing as discouraging as watching your friends and neighbors wake up each morning, go to work and come back with pleasant stories about their days. Little by little, every other person in the house starts dumping their little chores on you. You have no options but to take the shit to get whatever stipend you can find from it. Indeed, unemployment is a very discouraging phase.

One of the things that helped me get past this phase is social media. While it is important to do some offline job searches, social media can help fast-track your result. Getting on the social media platforms I’m about to reveal helped me get past the frustrating phase. Before I do this, here are some ways social media platforms can help you.

Positions you to be found by interested recruiters

As the world gradually tilts towards becoming a global village, recruiters are taking to social media to get the right candidate for their job. More and more employers prefer to go online in search of the perfect fit for their job than spending money advertising for the role. Social media platforms give them a vast number of job seekers to chose from. Plus, it is easier and economical. As such, as a job seeker, social media provides you the avenue to position yourself to be seen.

Shows your experience and expertise

Your participation on social media platforms can also reveal your level of experience to interested recruiters. However, be careful what you say on social media platforms. This is because unnecessary drunken debauchery on social media platforms can put off your potential employer. This is not to say that you should not participate in online forums. In fact, it is important that you are vocal about your knowledge as you never know whom you might impress enough to get a job offer.

Social media gives you a platform to establish your professional profile.

While having a well-written or typed CV attached to every job opportunity you find is important, it is equally important to have a professional platform with details of your expertise. This way, recruiters are able to find out if you fit into the position they are looking to fill. Your impressive profile can speak for you and get you a position that might not even be advertised. However, be careful how you share your personal details. Fill out the information that makes your connections know you are looking for a job.

Among the sites you can use for job search are LinkedIn and Bixex. Both platforms present an avenue for you to connect with professionals and grow your network. Also on both platforms are communities designed to help you grow your skill and meet quality connections.

If you are a job seeker and not on Bixex, you are missing out a lot.
